I had an earlier version of the Universal Electronics Inc. remote sold
thru Radio Shack. I phoned them and they faxed me all sorts of codes
for my equipment. That was 10 years ago. Now they can download the
codes over the phone - you put the receiver on the back of the remote
and they transmit tones to an internal modem.
But it is the learning feature that did it for me. Not all the codes
were present and I wanted to use custom buttons so I have to use the
learning feature.
Another feature is where you can assign a button to one unit no matter
what unit you have activated. For example, I dedicate the volume/mute
controls to the TV exclusively, so even if I am on the DVD function,
when I press the volume it hits the TV and not the DVD.
It also has a 30-sec commercial skip which I use all the time.
