My DOP used an XL2 for my first student film.
Good - beautiful lens, great sharpness, great colour, selectable 25 or
50 fpi, true 16:9 widescreen (not just 4:3 letterboxed)
Not good - front-heavy, not fun to use hand-held for long periods,
on-board sound processing is just OK, preferable to use a separate sound
recorder.
Beware the so-called "HD" cameras for $6000 - do some serious research
before committing your $$$ to one - google for HD vs HDV. I think you
would be better off starting with something like an XL2, then trading up
to a HD camera when you've got the experience to take advantage of what
HD has to offer.
