Upscaling and digital connections are not the same thing. True, most
digitally connected players offer upscaling but this is not proof that
upscaling is worthwhile. A DVi or HDMI connection does offer improved
clarity and colour, but many cannot pass blacker than black (the
Samsungs are notorious for this) over the digital link. All LCD TVs
upscale internally and it is simply not enough to presume that the
scaler in the TV is automatically inferior to the scaler in the dvd
player.
Personally I get best results with my Samsung 745 set to 480p over Dvi
and let the TV do the job of scaling to 1366 x 768. If I let the player
do the scaling, the image becomes a little too soft for my liking.
If the player can scale on a per pixel basis then you may get better
results - but never forget that the DVD you're scaling is 720 x 576 -
no amount of fancy scaling will change that.
HDMI is all good though simply from the clarity and colour reproduction point.
