You picked a bad sample, as Matrox has a software version of all their
codecs, which doesn't require the specific Matrox-hardware.
Software codecs will be around for much longer, as long as somebody ports
them to a newer version of the operating system. With very proprietary
software, this can be a problem of course, but there are plenty of people
skilled in reverse-engineering software.

So, instead of printing all the 1's and 0's to paper, it's better to
archive on film.
