I want to get a PVR as cheaply as possible and am trying to weigh up what's
best for my needs.
Firstly anything PC based is out as my PC is in the bedroom away from my HC
stuff, also it has to be wife-friendly.
I already have standard Sky and was contemplating Sky+ but I'm really not
keen on the idea of spending an extra 10 a month just to use the PVR side -
same goes for a Tivo subscription. From what I understand, it is actually
possible to use a Sky+ box without paying the sub, but you can't set it via
the Sky EPG - is this correct? Does using Sky+ (in any form) also require a
dual LNB fitted on the dish as well?
99% of what I would want to record is available via Freeview anyway, so even
a single Freeview tuner HDD PVR would be fine (having Sky would negate the
need for a second tuner really). C*rrys have the Ferguson FPVR1T for 120
which is a single tuner model but does allow simultaneous record and
playback which is as much as I'd need. Anyone have any experience of this
model or can recommend something else at the budget end of the market?
Is there anything HDD based that I could use in conjunction with Sky except
Sky+? i.e. something that would accept and capture a video signal via SCART
direct to HDD? Can Tivo be used at all without a sub? Do the DVD recorders
with HDD's have this facility or are they only for recording Freeview
broadcasts before they're burnt to disc?
Thanks for any advice you can give me.
Richard
