Actually it was. I've known many people who lived in
such societies. The best description of what it *felt*
like was like having advanced, metasticized cancer. A
pain only dulled with morphine, coughing, vomiting and
shitting blood; living in utter anguish, despair and
depression. Deprived of color and music.
And all the time, a handful of bloated idiots at the top
saying just work harder and everything will be perfect;
and their henchmen who insisted endlessly that things
were perfect already.
The first half of the Clint Eastwood movie "Firefox"
really conveyed the mood of the empire. A government
paranoid beyond belief, murderous, oppressive, obsessed
with minutiae in peoples lives.
It is a marvelous cure for ennui and relativism to be
cast into a society like that. It leaves one with a
sense of disgust and revulsion. But mostly you ask,
over and over again, why? Why do they do this to their
own people? What possible reason could people have to
actually want to live like that?
The answer lies with the poor, deluded fools that still
know in their heart of hearts that if things were that
way, here, then everything would be "perfect".
It is a sick religion.
