Ha..! I was in the Panasonic Pavillion in Osaka about 15 years ago. One
of the things you could do there was to stand in front of a green screen,
and they would key in aerial backgrounds of Japanese cities. You could
"fly around" for five minutes or so, and they would hand you the tape on
VHS.
They did it with a camera mounted at 90 degrees. A fan blew at the cape
you wore, and you could do it all while standing. Much simpler than
trying to do it on the floor as you've suggested. A girl would zoom the
lens in and out and pan around a little. The flying effect was pretty
good.
I still have the tape around somewhere...
