Used to be able to get a PCI board with serial ports on it from
Maplins for about £20 IIRC. The other way is to put a USB card in if
the MB can take it.
The serial port failure happened to me a few years ago. One of the
UARTs failed. Gave the PC to someone who didn't have a phone or cable
connection so wasn't bothered about putting a modem in. He did put a
USB card in though so he put a mouse to that and used the serial port
for connecting his mobile phone.
