Actually, even with verify after write won't guarentee readability. The
truth is that even with PI/PE error scans (use a Plextor 716/760a drive
+ PlexTools, etc - see www.cdrinfo.com review on these drives to see
what I mean), along with beta/jitter/pit/land/etc scans, playability
will vary depending on the player itself!
www.videohelp.com -> dVD players -> see your player.
However, you can start with solid media (Verbatim 16x DVD+R, Sony 16x
DVD+/-R (those made in Japan, esp.), Maxell...), burn using a top-notch
burner (Pioneer 109-111 series, Plextor 716a/760a), verify after write,
then PI/PE scan the entire thing afterwards, and most likely, you'll end
up with a disc that is readable across the majority of players out there.
Crappy burners + discs will only reduce the compatibility, not increase it.
But even then, after a solid burn, its the player that'll determine
whether it'll play or not. (no DVD+/-R disc out there is 100%
compatible with 100% of players out there today - this is a known fact
and there's simply no way around this point. Older players tend to do
worse, newer ones tend to do better - but even among the newer players,
there's great variability - see www.videohelp.com -> dvd players -> your
player for example).
However, doing the above will at least ensure that you've got a solid
burn with low PI/PE errors that hopefully will last a few years in cold
storage for backup use.
