Well yes you do have to pay more for a better tripod head ----- I had a 502
which developed a sticky spot in the tilt as well as the pan ---- I thought
I could save a few bucks --- but I went back to my old O'Conner 50 until I
could get a decent set of Vinten's -- but the cheapest "good" set cost me
$2400
The best tip anyone ever taught me years ago at the "Network That Dares to
be Dull" was to to grab the tripod head with your hand: between your thumb
and fourfingers-- not the pan handle, but the actual head--- and pan the
camera with your wrist. It's harder to do
but makes for a nice smooth pan -- even with a crappy tripod head
