Taking a first stab at my own question, a couple of fingers seem to be
pointing to the Philips DVP 642 DVD/DivX Player:

If I'm reading correctly, I can buy ANY Philips DVP642... including

and then type in a simple code with the remote control to make it
region-free. Is that correct?
