The infrared receiver is often a 3-pin, 38kHz device in a metal can.
It should be relatively simple to replace if you have some basic
soldering skills. Avoid buying parts from Sony if you can.

Something like this should do the trick:

Just be sure to match the pinout, ie Ground, V+ (usually +5V), and
Vout.

Of course the infrared receiver may not necessarily be the problem ...
