_Life_ is about trusting people. Why should ebay be any different?

That's what the feedback ratings are for, so that you don't go blindly into
a transaction. Of course, you _do_ have to actually pay attention.

Utterly irrelevant analogy.

Postal insurance for a package is solely for the benefit of the seller. The
seller's obligation is to deliver the goods. If she doesn't, she has to make
restitution. An insurance claim is paid to the seller, not the buyer, in
cases where the goods aren't delivered, to reimburse the seller for
reimbursing the buyer. If the seller wants to assume the risk herself, it
makes no difference at all to the buyer.

The foolish part is the seller using the word "insured" in the listing,
because people think they are getting something special when they see that
little "insured" stamp on the package. They're not, but they think they are,
so they want to see it, and they'll cry loud and long when they don't see
it. Like in the case of the "huge ripoff" that started this thread.

People are so insane about "THE SELLER GYPPED ME OUT OF 2 CENTS ON
SHIPPING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" that for all my catalog items I... well, maybe I
won't say what I did, but now I can do (or not do) tracking, insurance, and
different classes of postage at my discretion. (Yes, I do "self-insure" some
packages, and no buyer is ever the poorer for it.) And I also don't get any
more long whiny email exchanges about will I reduce shipping charges because
the person wants to buy 2, but could I ship the second to a different
address... All it takes is a simple proactive approach to the problem, on
the part of the seller.
