You don't have to go to that trouble anymore.

Scientists hold out prospect of a pill to make your hair curl
Reports by Roger Highfield, Science Editor in Paris

Forget hair straighteners, curlers and expensive blow-dries. Throw out
the styling mousse and hair gel.

For every straight-haired woman who has wanted curly hair and vice
versa, the future is looking decidedly free of hair-altering
implements and ointments.

For the first time, the structural difference between straight, wavy
and curly hair has been revealed by scientists in Paris.

They believe it could mark the first step towards drugs, or even
shampoos, that can control hair shape: a revolution in the world of
women's hair.

"Send me a bottle immediately," said Hilary Alexander, fashion
director of The Daily Telegraph. "I have long thin hair and I have
always wanted tumbling curls. How wonderful to think I could change
back and forth without having to have a perm."

Scientists also believe the discovery could lead to the death of hair
dyes, as drugs could be used to restore a shimmering head of blonde or
brunette curls in the prematurely grey. In Europe alone, at least 72
million women dye their hair.

In Clichy, Paris, a team from L'Oreal grew hair in the laboratory to
get to the root of what makes hair curly or straight. They found that
the hair bulb, around four millimetres deep in the scalp, is
hook-shaped in people with curly hair and straight in the case of
European and Asian hair. When it emerges from the scalp, the hair
shaft retains the shape of the follicle.

"A curly follicle makes curly hair," said Bruno Bernard, head of hair
biology at L'Oreal, yesterday. "This is a breakthrough. For a very
long time people did not understand how hair got curly."

Although the team has yet to find a "master switch" that controls
follicle shape, Mr Bernard said it was now possible to think about how
to change hair shape by using hormones or drugs.

"It is now possible to use biological methods to make curly hair
straight and vice versa," he said.

There are various reasons to think this is possible. Aids patients
treated with the drug interferon alpha have had their hair
straightened as a result.

And, bizarrely, it has been found that scalp hair transplanted to the
pubic area becomes curly.

"This means that the hormone environment has some influence," said Dr
Bernard. "This shows we can modulate shape."

The team believes the hair-curling discovery will lead to a kinder
alternative to the sodium hydroxide used in current hair relaxers,
which makes hair brittle and hard.

It could also one day end the use of acids in perms by making it
easier for straight-haired women to go frizzy.

The molecular details of hair curling were studied by Philippe
Barbarat, head of L'Oreal's hair knowledge laboratory, using six types
of hair, from straight and wavy Caucasian to wavy and curly African.

He used a beam from one of the world's brightest sources of X-rays in
Grenoble - the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility - to look at
hair's molecular structure.

The discovery may also herald good news for the grey-haired, spelling
an end to hair dyes and lengthy sojourns at the hairdressers.

The team has found that hair whitening is caused by the emptying of
the follicle's reservoir of pigment cells that give hair its colour -
melanocytes. Scientists believe that the decline in pigment cells may
be linked to the absence of TRP-2, an enzyme. "This protein, which is
present naturally in skin melanocytes, seems to have a cell protection
function, helping these cells to survive," said Mr Bernard.

He added that TRP-2 was too large a molecule to penetrate 4mm down to
reach the melanocytes, so other approaches had to be developed based
on small molecules that could easily penetrate the skin.

The work could also help deal with a common condition with bearded
black men: pseudofolliculitis, when the curly hair, cut short by
shaving, grows into the skin to cause inflammation.
