There are countless Google refs to PIE/PIF and this search term might
help

Basically, some drives report the internal error recovery results and
some diagnostic software will graph the values. It is important to
note that not all drives will report the same errors for the same
physical disc. To make the graphs meaningful to yourself it seems
best to select, or create, a benchmark disc which gives good results
in as many drives as you will be using - then compare subsequent tests
on whichever drive you're using to its benchmark values.
The time to run one of these tests is somewhat faster than verifying.
The reason behind your "slow" verify step would be more obvious, I
think.
