If a repair station is authorized to repair Macs and use (buy) Mac parts
and manuals - then presumably they have been authorised by Apple, since
this is whom they will have bought their parts and manuals from.

There are "unauthorized" Mac repairers out there - who buy second hand
Apple parts and third party parts and repair Macs that are out of
warranty - due to accident/abuse or outside the warranty period.

The price that Apple charges for a motherboard (bought outright) is so
expensive in comparison to an exchange motherboard that it would be
difficult to make a business repairing Macintoshes without being able to
purchase exchange motherboards. And so it is with most of the other
components (except hard drives and RAM) - it would be hard making a
business out of buying outright parts from Apple instead of exchanging
the parts (assuming they were in an exchangeable condition).

Now here is the grey area of my knowledge: I was under the impression
that only authorized Apple repairers were able to purchase exchange
parts from Apple. If this is the case, then Apple has confidence in
their abilities to repair stuff under warranty and to be able to return
exchange dead parts in a condition that allows them to be repaired and
recycled as service parts.

Most of the work that the Authorized repairers do is warranty work which
justifies the expense of gaining and retaining authorized status. This
involves paperwork in handling warranties - so what the heck does a
warranty station actually do if not repair equipment under warranty,
which is generally what a authorized repairer does too.

All very mystifying. I guess there is a lesson for us all there, Doc,
after your unfortunate experiences. I think we need to make sure that
when our computer(s) goes in for repair under warranty, it will be
covered by the manufacturers warranty, and that the "authorization" is
from the manufacturer and not just the by the cousin of the owner.
