Just to throw in something from a broadcasting perspective... We
backlight all monitors in our grading areas with a diffuse 'illuminant
D' (ie Northlight / 6500K) wash. It's easier on the eyes if you're
spending twelve hours in a darkened room trying to colour-correct TV
programmes and it provides a crucial unchanging colour reference in
the room to ensure consistency in the colour balance being applied by
the colourist.
So if it's possible to set Ambilight to give an unchanging backlight
colour I'd definitely consider this to the "a good thing".
