I was about to discard a 1500 which behaved similarly, until finding some
of the repair tips on the www.nerd-out.com site. Besides cleaning the
laser under direct vision, I discovered that many "bad disc" issues
specifically affecting DVD's are due to a laser positioning failure. The
laser assembly sits on a small spring-loaded platform; it is up to the
springs to bring the laser lens close enough to be within focusing range.
With time, these springs collapse and the platform does not elevate quite
high enough. Unscrewing the 4 screws (with the springs underneath),
removing the platform, and stretching the springs to their original length
is often enough to fix the problem; and it takes all of 10 minutes.
