atm there are 2 toshiba hd-dvd players the a1 and the ax1 (both the same
innards just more cosmetics and better build on the xa1, not to say the a1
isnt a beast!) and also a rca clone, there is a samsung blu-ray player due
out any day now in the states, but iirc no discs till the end of june to
play on it! the cheapest option for blu-ray will probably be the ps3 due
november but with blu-ray comes regional coding again so do u get a us ps3
or uk ps3? hd-dvd has no regional coding at present but could be implemented
at a later date (the current players are region free fro hd-dvd's and set to
region0+1 ntsc for standard dvd's) i have the a1 player and cannot fault it
its worth it for the upscaling element alone and when it comes to hd movies
its quality far surpasses sky hd and the full 15gb+ 1080i movies i have
downloaded the sound is also a huge step up when set to 5.1 out it outputs
full uncompressed dolby (7.1 will come at a later date though it still
sounds way clearer than a normal dvd when encoded to ex/es through the
optical out) there are lots of great movies available on hd-dvd and the same
for blu-ray i will get a ps3 at some point so even though i have hd-dvd im
not anti blu! im just pro movies! if all the films i want are released on
hd-dvd then i would choose that but as that will probably never be the case
u gotta double dip into both formats if u want hd movie nirvana :( they can
both coexist but u can be sure which ever one i invest in the most be be the
one that fails! i think over here (UK) blu will win purely because hd is so
new to the average public over here and spending 's on a player will
confuse them when they can have a ps3 that will play games too afaik the
release over here will be around the same time as the ps3
