Seriously though, I did think of it, but I always thought of it more like
an extension to the DVD format than a competitor. After all, every DIVX
player was capable of playing DVDs. It was just the extra DIVX feature,
which allowed playback of special discs that you could "rent". If
anything, DIVX was a competitor to rental DVDs rather than DVDs as a whole.
I think DIVX had a "buy" option for their discs, but I don't think it was
ever seriously implemented.
