I admit that today's modern multiplex theatres with stadium seating and
great audio is a big improvement, but I'll still take my home theatre any
day.
I have a home theatre, and while I do not own an HD-DVD or Blue Ray, I do
have an HDMI upconverter DVD player connected to a DLP HD-projection TV and
an 8' screen and it looks as good as most of the theatres and the sound
system is far batter.
Then there are people who, not only won't turn off their cell phones, but
they actually answer them and carry on a conversation during the movie, plus
people who won't stop talking or make their kids behave.
You add to that $10 for a popcorn and a Coke (yes, I understand the
economics of why concessions are so expensive) and sticky floors, and paying
$12 for the privilege to attend and I wonder why anyone goes to the theatre.
It can easily cost a hundred bucks to take a family out to the movies.
As for viewing a 'bunch of dots'... slightly less than 10% of the big
theatre chains have at least 1 theatre with a digital projection system
('dots') and more and more movies are being filmed in HDTV (Star
Wars-Revenge was one and Superman Returns is another) the days of optical
film are coming to an end. It won't be long when will you find Vistavision
and Panavision cameras on eBay as collector's items.
I have gone to the theatre only once this year (so far)... I went to see
Mission Impossible III. I will go later this month to see Superman Returns
and may go to see Casino Royale this November (then again, I'm still unhappy
about the Daniel Craig choice for Bond so I might stay home). I only go to
theatres because I'm too impatient to wait for the home video release.
I am a bit far sighted but I have bifocals, so I'm not borderline blind, but
I would much rather watch a good movie sitting in my Lazy Boy than even the
best theatre.
