HARD DRIVES: our recommendations to anyone in the market is . . 300GB,
video editing software doesn't like small drives, that is, our experience is
that NLE's like about 40% free space on the drive, thus a 300GB drive can
work well up to about 200GB's without burps, after that the software can get
sluggish and act up. just our personal experience with multi-camera
editing.
NLE SOFTWARE: our choices are Avid. we've tried others and are very
pleased with Avid solutions. they even have "all-in-one" solutions that
eliminate the need for other programs to do other tasks.
RAM: our experience is that anything less than 2GB is risky, literally the
more the better. we just upgraded our dual core gateway 840GM machine to
3GB and it definately helped . . we also added a 1GB stick in our 512MB
streaming machine and what a difference, a 30 min show that used to take
35-45 minutes to compress was finished in just 18 minutes. video production
needs memory. our next step will be to take the 512's out of the biggie
machine and put two 1GB sticks in it for a total of 4GB :o)
