You could at least wait until the PS3 is released, which for $500-$600 will
be capable of playing Blu-Ray movies.
Another option is to wait for a dual-format player. Some manufacturers are
looking into making them, and as long as they aren't too much more than a
single-format player, would make the best option for making sure you can
play the winning format. That's assuming one format clearly "wins," and it
turns out to be either HD DVD or Blu-Ray
