Well, Disney while announced support of the format, it had announced
support of DVD at the same time:

Fox joins Disney, DreamWorks, Paramount, and Universal as the
fifth movie studio to sign on to the Divx technology. (Two of the
five, Disney and Universal, will also issue movies on the open DVD
format.)
Disney released some titles early on that were exclusively on DIVX, but
they weren't exclusively releasing DIVX discs. Likewise, Fox released both
DVD and DIVX discs.
However, you're correct, DIVX was a competing format to DVD.
