I think you are making too much out of this. I have a Cannon XL-2 and
GL-1. They both have the same guts really. I have never used the preset
white balance because I have never needed them. The software is very
good at adjusting to the given conditions. I will say that if you are
concerned about a given shoot I have found a very easy way to adjust
your white balance. Always carry a white, white piece of card stock
with you. Make sure it is WHITE and not off-white, pearl white,
yellowish white, etc. Get new clean ones as you need them. Set up your
camera at the shooting stage. Put your white stock in from of the
camera (make sure it is clean) and set your white balance. Then when
you move to a different location repeat these steps. You will always
get the best white for the given situation. I am a wedding videographer
and always have to be sure the Bride's dress looks white, and it has
never let me down.
