It was/is seen as a playback only medium because Laserdisc recorders were
as rare as rocking horse shit and cost a fortune.

In some ways I think HD is a bit early, DVD recorders have only recently
within the last year come down to VHS recorder prices and people are
still getting to grips with that, now there's new formats it's just going
to cause more confusion to the people they want to sell it to, the people
that through mass buying will overall get the prices down.
Sure I'd love a HD setup but the cost is going to horrific, at least with
DVD technology prices came down relatively quickly and I can't see that
happening as fast with HD technology.
