I've got a car charger for the iPod (AFAIK, NO MP3 player comes with a
car charger as standard), but I also have a car-to-USB adaptor so I can

Incredible. My iPod 20Gb is perfectly useable after 2 years of regular
use, during which time it has either been in a pouch on my backpack, a
car holder, or in the belt clip - the only protection.
