 You should be able to do both of these things, so I suspect you are
 indeed overlooking something. You might have a problem with some DVDs
 or tapes because of copy protection, but otherwise it should work.
 
 Try to give a reasonably detailed description of how you hooked things
 up, and someone might spot the problem...Maybe not me, but someone who
 knows a bit more :-)
