 I've had the reverse experience with a Tevion DVDR. I replaced the
 original short cable (which passed through a ferrite core) with a
 slightly longer cable (without the ferrite) and found that the DVD-R
 could not be detected. I did this because I was experimenting with a
 replacement burner which would not fit inside the chassis.

 Look for failures in the electrolytic capacitors, eg bulging, leaking.
