According to the diagrams I've seen (online and elsewhere),
for each diagonal "swipe" of the rotating head, the video info
is recorded in the first part (~90%?) of the track, and the
audio, timecode, etc. data in the remaining part. It is this
trailing edge of the diagonal stripes (physicaly at the bottom
of the tape) which appear to be more vulnerable to mis-
tracking problems. It seems reasonable that mis-tracking
of this type will show up in the audio before you start seeing
"blocking" or "pixelization" symptoms of dropouts in the
video parts of the recording.
