Doc,
How did you get to this particular repair shop? They are officially
known as "Authorized Service Providers" and I'm wondering how you ended
up at a placed that wasn't authorized.
I'm surprised they wouldn't cover it in some way anyway. I don't know
who your dealer was but clearly he didn't do his job. if you bought
direct, ditto.
This is unusual. Even now Apple has extended the repair program for
eMacs with known video problems. I'm not saying they rush out and
clamor for these things but when push comes to shove, bad product can
turn into a PR nightmare as you can well demonstrate.
