perhaps...

but if you're working in an extremely limited market, your 'peers' might
have standards that fall significantly short of actual professionalism.

I personally prefer a definition that goes something like this.

Professional: someone who has demonstrated, over time and in a single
field of endeavor, the ability to continually produce professional work
of sufficient quality and quantity so as to prevent starvation.


In other words, If you and your family DEPENDS on your work to put a
roof over your head and food on your table. You're a pro. No matter who
says different.
