How about PMR? As I believe I understand it, PMR should soon be legal
Europe-wide (if it isn't already), and the kits are now ridiculously
cheap -- Maplin in the UK (www.maplin.co.uk) are selling a pair of
very basic units for as little as UKP15! You can pay a lot more than
that for pro models (but still half the price that I paid for an early
Motorola pair a few years ago). There's a range of headsets and boom
mics available to suit as well.
They ARE on public frequencies, so there is always the risk of someone
else listening in to your conversations, and even breaking in
(accidentally or deliberately) with their own transmissions. But I've
never found that a problem when I've used them, and you can always
quickly change channels. I've used mine a lot for outside situations
where you want to have the camera rolling BEFORE the car/train/etc
comes into shot -- just station a gopher out of sight down the
track/road, and he can give you those few seconds warning.
They're also useful for keeping in touch with your colleagues at
crowded trade shows!
