Well, there's a number of reasons, though I'm sure you can find fault
with them :)
1) the set was rushed. Season 1 was released a couple months ago, and
season two was pushed out to ride the capetails of the new movie. The
set is missing the animated menu's of the other WB animated sets, and
all the disks have the same artwork.
2) Widescreen was a last minute thing. Originally, the set was
solicited as being full screen. Fan reaction got that changed, but
given the time crunch WB was limited in what they could do.
3) The dvd's were made from the broadcast masters. The series was never
shown in HD, but was aired as you see it with the hard letterbox. Could
WB have dug up the original elements and created an anamorphic version?
Yes... but they didn't think it was worth it just for a dvd release. If
there was a broadcast market for an anamorphic version of the show they
could use to justify the cost it would be one thing, but as of now this
is it. The creators are happy with it, so just sit back and enjoy the
show ^_^
