There are plenty of exceptions to that too though. Some "comics" are every
bit as subtle and discrete and "mature" as any "real book" or good movie can
be.
My brain isn't totally functional just at the minute. I can't even think of
titles. The Sandman is a fine example of an excellent comic read -although
it is probably a little more "traditional comic fare" than I was thinking of
just now.
Ghost World and other stuff by David <can't recall his name at the moment>
are all very 'understated', but a good introduction to how varied comics can
be nonetheless.
