I wouldn't call it "complete bullshit".
It may not be a requirement now, or even at the time of product release, but
it could very well be later on.
What do you make of this?

I can easily forsee a scenario where Blu-ray players need to be updated to a
specific version to play any newer releases if renewal updates are necessary
to defeat disc or player hacks at any time.
I can also anticipate a situtation where some players no longer work with
older media due to bugs or crashes that exist in a given update, since the
player code will be supposedly be dynamic as opposed to read-only. Or that a
player can't be used for several hours because cumulative updates need to be
applied to a new player just purchased that doesn't have all the latest
updates to play the latest purchased Blu-ray media title.
That's no different than PC's that require service packs, critical security
updates, runtime updates (e.g., DirectX, Java), or media player updates
(e.g, QuickTime, RealPlayer, Windows Media Player) in order to use the
latest software, play the latest games, and/or view the latest videos
created with the latest versions of codecs.
(A new PC just out of the box cannot be properly used until all of the
necessary updates are applied, unless a person never wants to connect their
PC to the Internet. And even then, some newer software titles purchased some
time after the PC was purchased may require the download of an update that
wasn't otherwise required for any of the pre-loaded software on that PC. At
that point, Internet connectivity will at some point be forced.)
