I take your point. I think of "Flower Drum Song" as the musical in
which Oscar Hammerstein II, the poet of the American musical theater,
rhymed "have-a-new" with "avenue."
But even though FDS is considered lesser R&H, I think lesser R&H is a
lot more interesting than a lot of other people's first-rate. Yes, we
can smile and shake our heads over FDS's corny as well as naive
treatment of Chinese immigrants and Chinese-Americans, but I still
think it makes for an entertaining movie, which several good songs,
such as "You Are Beautiful."
And while I'm not saying a single number can redeem an entire musical,
surely "Love, Look Away," especially in context, is one of the
loveliest songs R&H ever came up with. It's perhaps the most moving
scene in the film - until they turn it into a dream ballet (ugh!).
