The reason? RENTAL RETARDS
The folks that make money off the rental retards were afraid they
were going to lose business once VHS movies were being bought more and
more often, so the price got jacked up everywhere, including to the
renters. It actually boosted Laser Disc's position in the market for
quite a while.
