You only have "own" material ? no pre-recorded tapes > buy-movies ?
If so, pre-recorded tapes of that kind could have Macrovision, what
jams your picture AGC in the recording recorder.
A combo in such a case is also a big no-go, between seperate devices
you can place "a device" in between, :)
TBC and NR are nice extra "features" you also should look out for, if
the tapes are worn and have dropouts.
