I'd certainly call LD a niche market in the US. It never gained the same
sort of mainstream penetration that VHS did, despite the enhanced video
and audio quality.

The reasons for this were pretty simple:

1: You couldn't use LDs to record TV shows.
2: Most rental places didn't carry LDs.
3: LDs were EXPENSIVE. $20 for a movie on VHS or $120 for the same movie
on LD?

LDs were a high-end item, and were quickly dropped by the AV crowd for DVD
for even better picture and sound, more durable media (no laser rot) and
cheaper prices. $30-40 for a DVD in the early days sure beat $80-100 for
a LD.

I know overseas LDs were more popular - especially in Asia. But once DVD
came out, their popularity dropped off rapidly.
