Well, sure. I use only Sony Excellence in my VX2000, and only once. It
gets played once when I transfer the video. That's just 2 passes for a
higher-quality tape. Use crappy tape (if there's such a thing -- I've not
heard of off-brand miniDV that used tape from a source other than the same
majors who produce for the branded tape manufacturers), or reuse it multiple
times, or store your camera somewhere that's nice and dusty and gritty, or
use the camera in very high humidity, and you'll create conditions in which
the binder can fail.

I'm really surprised that you're having problems with video shot on an XL-1
and XL-2. What were the circumstances of the shoot?
