i discovered what the problem is. for some reason, the geniuses at
philips decided NOT to use the normal key assignments for
rewind/forward, and instead use the *menu* nav keys (the Left and Right
buttons).
this presented a problem for my philips 4-device universal, because the
*other* geniuses who designed it didnt give it 100% nav buttons --
instead they doubled up the nav arrows w/ Chapter & Volume, and a
"shift" key to activate the nav arrows. problem is, the shift key also
happens to bring up the dvd's root menu. so basically, one would have
to access the menu & re-exit it, in order to use the fast-forward and
rewind functionality on this remote, w/ this dvd player. brilliant!!
so i just bought an RCA device, w/ dedicated arrow buttons. works now.
