That's funny, given that the studios *are* releasing their classic
films on DVD. Among them is the specific film mentioned in the
original posting: ROMAN HOLIDAY, which Paramount released in a
magnificently restored Special Edition with all sorts of extras.
I've got probably a hundred or so feet of shelf space taken up
by DVDs of pre-1960 films released by the major studios. I mean
released on DVD, not (just) released originally on film. With
the exception of a shelf of DVD releases by Roan, very few are
Public Domain issues.
All of the major Golden Age studios -- Warner, Universal, Paramount,
Columbia, and MGM -- are releasing vintage films on DVD right
alongside their current titles.
