I don't know if anyone remembers the cheap-as-chips Targa DRH-5100x
DVD/HDD recorder units that Lidl were selling a while back (I know there
was a thread in ACUDAB about them, and I remember posting to RVDP for a
region-free hack), but there's a new firmware available which improves
the accuracy of the editing utility. It's available from the Targa
Support pages (have your serial number handy to get to it quickly).
However, I will shortly be making available a version which I have
'modified'. This version removes the artificial restriction on
timeshifting (i.e. you cannot use the timeshift function if the source
is MacroVision protected), allowing you to timeshift any content at all
(including Sky Movies and Sky BoxOffice). It is my belief that this
artificial restriction imposed by the MacroVision Corporation and Targa
devalues the product to the cost of the consumer, who was unlikely to be
aware of such a restriction before purchasing said device.
The modified version installs perfectly (tested on a DRH-5100x with
default firmware, MacroVision signals provided by a VHS copy of 'Men in
Black') and works a treat.
