--- Because my view is that the only thing being created of actual lasting
value in the typical work for hire deal is the EXPERIENCE you get ---
Well that just warms my heart... but the original question was not
predicated on a "Work For Hire" and it sounds like HIS work falls OUTSIDE of
that definition
Like, I said in my original post --- usually I get compensated well enough
so that I don't CARE about field tapes ---- I usually make backups of the
good stuff anyway
When I shoot Stills -- I keep the negatives and raw files and only give
"finished" files
I keep my After Effects Comps --- They are clearly Mine and only give the
end results that process is mine too -- not the client's
I retain use of certain signature Special Effects "Looks" --- those are
mine as well
But my network stuff is definitely "Work for Hire" --- so there's no issue
there
But if it's a job for MY company and the clients are cheapskates-- which
happens from time to time --- then absolutely I will charge them --- usually
with a SMILE
because MOST of my private work comes from referrals.
People who work mainly for "Experience" are called INTERNS
People who charge and get paid a fair wage are called GOOD BUSINESSMEN
