I bought my first computer on the last day of 1998--Dec 31st. It had a
350MHz processor, 128MB of RAM and an 8 GB hard drive. In the 2 front bays,
there was a CD-ROM and a 100MB Zip drive. For this computer, and the 17"
monitor that came with it, I paid almost exactly $1000.

Fast forward to 2001--Sep 9th--just in time to watch the 2nd plane hit the
WTC. I bought my 2nd computer, having a 1200MHz processor, 512MB of RAM and
an 80GB hard drive. In the front bays were a CD-ROM and a 12x LG CD burner.
For this I paid $830. Add $250 for a 19" monitor. Over the intervening
years I've added a DVD-ROM and a CD/DVD burner that even handles DVD-RAM. I
added a Santa Cruz sound card and a 4-input USB 2.0 card (since the computer
had only USB 1.1 as it came.

I'm now contemplating my 3rd computer. It will have 1GB of RAM, a 3.3MHz
processor and 2--count 'em--160GB hard drives, a fancy Japanese video card,
an M-audio sound card, slots for all the popular memory cards, a DVD-ROM and
a 16x dual-layer DVD/CD burner. This computer will cost $700. An optional
add-on is a 19" LCD display for $250 extra. They throw in a free printer
and a bunch of free software that may or may not be of use.

My neighbor across the street paid more than that for his audiophile
interconnects!
