Okay, are you doing this because you want to keep these forever, or because
you don't get around to watching them before you run out of space?
If it's a space issue, then really, I would recommend dropping a larger hard
drive in that puppy. It's not that hard to do, 300GB drives go for
$100-110, not even on sale, and if you want to spend more you can buy a
pre-configured drive that you just plug in. Why deal with the DVD-Rs at
all? If going from VCR to Tivo changes the way you watch TV, then probably
a similar magnitude of change occurs when you get a high-capacity Tivo.
If you want to keep them forever, then you may want to consider better
quality - at least if you think you'll ever upgrade to a larger and/or
hi-def TV. YMMV.
