I like ID3Kill for that purpose -- though I'll bet you just need to strip out
the ID3V2 tags, not the ID3V1 tags. It'll give you a choice of both or only
one. For one of my old mp3 players I had to remove the ID3V2 tags.
It's freeware, less than 200K and shows up in all the search engines. Here's
