Thanks for your advice, Richard. And your point about dvcreators.net
"street creds" should not overlooked -- here's why: I read their review
of the Rode Videomic below and thought they made a strong case for the
Rode Videomic over the Senn 300.
Here's what they said:
RODE VideoMic
Q. Why would I need one of these mics?
A. Studio quality recording at an affordable price - blows away the
onboard mic of most prosumer cameras.
Get rid of bad audio! By using a high-quality shotgun style mic you can
easily improve your audio. Have you ever heard zoom or tape motor noise
in your recordings? The RODE VideoMic has a built-in shockmount to
solve this problem! Suspending the mic in mid-air cures those
irritating sounds typically picked up by a camera's onboard mic.
The nice part is the entire assembly slides right into your camera's
hotshoe and plugs in to your camera via 3.5mm miniplug, with nothing
more to buy.
The sound quality is incredibly amazing at this price point and
absolutely blows away the competition. Nothing on the market can
compare. Excellent directional pick-up with canceling of sound arriving
from the sides just like the big boys.
If you're going for dialog you'll still want to keep the subject no
more than 5 feet away to pickup a good track. This holds true with any
shotgun mic.
A foam windscreen is also included for helping with light wind.
Sometimes you may hear a bass heavy rumble with a good gust, in this
case you can slide the on-off switch all the way up to "HPF-high pass
filter" which eliminates anything below 80Hz.
The VideoMic is battery powered by a single 9volt which lasts about 100
hours. It's constructed of lightweight ABS plastic and weighs in at
about a half pound. The connector is a 3.5mm stereo mini-plug. The mic
will record mono and output the same signal to both Left and Right
Channels.
Overall an affordable mic with a sweet sound for location audio or
voice overs and you can't beat the price!
