Who said anything about gaming consoles? There have been tons of
instances where people managed to totally bypass the protection or
encryption scheme of a program simply by patching it to ignore or just not
make the jump to that routine.

And if you replace the firmware? Bam. No more checks.

How'd we get to DVRs? DVRs have always stored compressed signals. The
only difference is whether you're doing the compression on the
broadcaster's side (satelite, digital cable) or if you're doing it in
realtime on your side (everyone else.)
